There is no single right answer to “when should I go to Kaş?” — because the answer depends on what you want to do. The month with the warmest sea is the worst month for walking. The week the town is at its liveliest is the wrong week for anyone seeking quiet. Below we set out Kaş month by month, with real sea temperatures and rainfall data, and then sum it up as: given who you are, which month suits you. We are here all twelve months of the year at Luna Kaş, so between the figures you will also find what we have learned by living it.

The Short Answer: Who Should Come When?

Before the month-by-month detail, here are direct answers to the five questions we are asked most:

The Best Months for Your Priority

If Swimming Is Your Priority

July, August and September. The average sea temperature peaks at 28.3 °C in August and is still 27.1 °C in September. Because the water warms more slowly than the land, September has a warmer sea than June.

For Walking and Trekking

April, May, October and November. The Kaş section of the Lycian Way can be genuinely dangerous in high summer: no shade and few water sources. In spring, by contrast, the hillsides are covered in flowers.

If You Want to Avoid the Crowds

May, October and early November. The sea is still swimmable, the streets have emptied and you no longer need to worry about booking a table.

If You Are Watching Your Budget

November to March is the most affordable window. April-May and October sit in the middle; July-August is the most expensive period of the year.

For Diving and Underwater Visibility

September and October. The water is both warm and clear; the surface layer stirred up over the summer has settled. May is a good alternative, though the water is cooler.

Kaş Month by Month

The sea temperature and rainfall figures below are long-term averages; air temperatures are the typical daytime ranges. A few degrees’ variation from year to year is normal.

Spring: March, April, May

March

At 16.6 °C the sea is at its coldest point of the year — this is a month not for swimming but for having the town to yourself. An average of 7 rainy days and 81 mm of rain. Almond and plum blossom appear and the hillsides turn green. Ideal for ancient sites: Antiphellos, Patara and Myra are empty, there is no heat and you are not hunting for shade.

April

The month the season opens. The sea is 17.5 °C, still cool but the brave are getting in. Rainfall drops to 45 mm across 6 rainy days. The finest time on the Lycian Way: wildflowers, mild air and long days. Boat tours start running but do not yet fill up.

May

For many people the most balanced month of the year. The sea reaches a swimmable 20.2 °C, rainfall falls to 36 mm and daily sunshine reaches 12 hours. Stuffed courgette flowers and wild herbs are on the table this month. Prices have not yet peaked.

Summer: June, July, August

June

The sea is 23.7 °C, rain is almost absent (11 mm across 2 rainy days) and there are 13 hours of sun a day. The summer crowd has not fully arrived; the second half of the month picks up as schools break. The best compromise for anyone who wants the sea without the crowds.

July

The driest month of the year: an average of 6 mm of rain and just 1 rainy day. The sea is 26.9 °C. Daytime temperatures climb above 30 °C and the middle of the day is spent in the shade. Perfect for boat trips and coves; for ancient sites, choose the early morning.

August

The peak of the sea: an average of 28.3 °C, the warmest water of the year. It is also the busiest and most expensive month, and finding a table without a reservation is hard. The afternoon breeze strengthens, which reduces water clarity on boat trips — choose a morning departure.

Autumn: September, October, November

September

The month for people who know Kaş. At 27.1 °C the sea is still close to August, but the air has softened, the crowds have dispersed and prices have begun to come down. Rainfall is only 16 mm. Underwater visibility is at its best of the year — ideal for diving.

October

The sea is still 24.7 °C, comfortably swimmable. Rainfall rises to 55 mm and the first downpours appear, but most days are clear. A perfect return to walking: the heat has passed and the trails are pleasant again. The season slows towards the end of the month.

November

The sea is 21.8 °C — cool for most visitors, though the acclimatised still swim. Rainfall rises to 92 mm across 6 rainy days. Boat trips thin out and some restaurants close. In return, the town is entirely yours and prices fall to their lowest.

Winter: December, January, February

December

One of the two wettest months of the year: 171 mm across an average of 10 rainy days. The sea is 19.3 °C. Even so, it would be wrong to call a Mediterranean winter harsh — on a clear December day you can sit out on the terrace. Apart from the New Year period the town is very quiet.

January

The wettest month: 173 mm. The sea is 17.6 °C. Sunshine drops to 6 hours a day. This is when the green is deepest and the view clearest; across the water Meis and the mountains behind it stand out sharply. Orange and mandarin season.

February

The month winter breaks. Rainfall falls to 120 mm and the sunny hours begin to lengthen. At 16.8 °C the sea is near its coldest of the year. Almond blossom appears; a surprisingly lovely period for photography and walking.

Sea Temperature by Month

This is the figure visitors to Kaş ask about most. Based on long-term averages, the monthly mean sea temperature runs as follows:

MonthSea temperature (avg.)Suitability for swimming
January17.6 °CCool
February16.8 °CCool
March16.6 °CColdest of the year
April17.5 °CCool
May20.2 °CSwimmable
June23.7 °CPleasant
July26.9 °CVery good
August28.3 °CWarmest of the year
September27.1 °CVery good
October24.7 °CPleasant
November21.8 °CSwimmable
December19.3 °CCool

The striking point: the sea runs about two months behind the land. In July, when the air is hottest, the water has not yet peaked; conversely in October, when the air has cooled, the sea is still 24.7 °C. That is why the swimming season in Kaş is longer than the calendar suggests.

Seasons, Crowds and Prices

High Season: July – August

The warmest sea, the longest days, the fullest town. Accommodation and restaurant prices are at their peak, and popular tables and boat trips need booking in advance. Family and school holiday season.

Shoulder Season: May, June, September, October

Kaş at its best appears in these four months. The sea is swimmable, the weather balanced, the town breathes and prices are reasonable. The period most repeat visitors choose.

Low Season: November – April

Wet but mild. Some businesses close and boat services thin out. In return prices are at their lowest and the town returns entirely to local life. For culture, walking and quiet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to visit Kaş?

There is no single answer; it depends on your priority. For swimming, July, August and September; for balance, May, June and September; for walking and ancient sites, April, May, October and November; for quiet and lower prices, November to March. If we had to give one general recommendation, September is the only month that offers the sea and the calm of Kaş at the same time.

When does the sea warm up in Kaş?

The sea reaches a swimmable 20.2 °C in May, rises to 23.7 °C in June and peaks at 28.3 °C in August. It holds at 27.1 °C in September and 24.7 °C in October. Because the sea runs roughly two months behind the land, October offers a swimming experience close to June.

What is there to do in Kaş in winter?

November to March is wet but mild. Trips to the ancient sites (Antiphellos, Patara, Myra, Tlos) are far more enjoyable in this period: no heat, no crowds. Walks on the Lycian Way, the citrus season, quiet town streets and the sharp view across to Meis on clear days are the highlights of winter. Water activities, however, are limited.

Is Kaş rainy?

The annual rainfall total is high, but almost all of it falls between November and May. January averages 173 mm across 10 rainy days, while July has just 6 mm and a single rainy day. In summer, rain is practically absent.

When is it least crowded?

November to March is the quietest period. Within the season, May and October are the best way to escape the crowds without giving up the sea. July-August and the national and religious holidays are the busiest times.
