Sea kayaking, also known as a sea canoe, is a type of paddling craft developed for use in lakes, bays, and seas. It is essentially an Eskimo kayak, originally used as a hunting boat. In appearance, it is very similar to traditional Eskimo kayaks. In the past, the primary purpose of these kayaks was to hunt animals in lakes, rivers, and the sea. Over time, they evolved and diversified depending on their regions (such as Greenland and Alaska).
Why Sea Kayaking in Türkiye?
The reason sea kayaking is a popular activity in Türkiye is due to the southern coastline’s sea conditions, the mild climate, and the opportunity to explore breathtaking coastal landscapes and secluded bays.
The Kaş region is highly suitable for sea kayaking thanks to its many bays. One of the most popular day tours is the sea kayaking experience in Kekova.
Kekova Island was separated from the mainland after a major earthquake in ancient times, and a large part of the settlement sank beneath the sea. Swimming and diving are not allowed in much of this area.
On a classic Kekova trip, you can explore Kekova Island, Tersane Bay, the Sunken City of Kekova, underwater ruins, rock-carved formations, and Simena (Kaleköy) with its steps and ancient walls.
To give a brief overview of the tour: participants are free to choose between single or double kayaks. After the kayaks are prepared, a guide provides a technical briefing, explaining paddling techniques and steering. The tour starts from Üçağız, and after paddling approximately 3 km, you arrive at Tersane Bay on Kekova Island. After a short break, you continue to the Sunken City, where you paddle along the shoreline and observe ancient ruins up close. While paddling through the stunning turquoise waters, you also get the chance to see the details of the Kekova Sunken City.
Finally, after paddling another 1 km, you reach Kaleköy, where those who wish can visit the historic Simena Castle. After all that paddling, you can recharge with a delicious lunch in Simena before heading back.
If you trust your arm strength, don’t miss this tour. 🙂
