In the middle of summer, when the Mediterranean sun is roasting overhead and you mutter “I’d give anything to cool down right now” — if you’re in Kaş, the answer is already in your pocket. Most of Kaş’s coves stay cool and clear all year long, and one of them stands apart by name, by water, by sunset: Büyük Çakıl Beach. If you’re planning a change of air after breakfast at Luna Kaş, put it at the top of the list.

Where is Büyük Çakıl Beach?
Five Minutes from Kaş Centre
Büyük Çakıl sits right next to Kaş town centre — close enough to walk. It welcomes you at the very end of the Lycian Way’s Kaş–Limanağzı stretch, where the path comes down off the hill and meets the sea. The name says it: no fine sand here, just sizable pebbles. They’re one of the heroes that keep the water turquoise.
Crystal-Clear, Cool, Almost Bone-Chilling Fresh
Büyük Çakıl’s story starts with the freshwater springs that mix into the sea here. They lower the temperature, dilute the salt, and lend that turquoise colour. But the strange beauty of it is this: the coolness isn’t uniform. One stroke is warm, the next is ice-cold. Your body asks itself for a second whether it’s summer or winter, then settles on the answer — summer, but the most generous version the Mediterranean offers.
Anyone who feels it once says, “why did I wait this long to come?” Could you be our next guest?
When We Say Beach, We Don’t Mean Beach Club
Many of Türkiye’s coastal towns lost their boutique soul as they grew popular — the people escaping the city ended up urbanising the place they ran to. Kaş is still resisting. Which means the boom-tss-boom-tss beach-club style of place is in the minority here. Büyük Çakıl is firmly outside that mainstream: there’s music, but it sits at a whisper, and the waves are always one notch louder. You can crack open a book and burn through a hundred pages in an hour, or read nothing at all and just stare — both are equally legitimate.
Bonus Guests: Fish (and Maybe a Sea Turtle)
You don’t really need a mask. As with most of Kaş’s coves, Büyük Çakıl has a healthy fish population — small ones nibbling at your feet while you swim, whole shoals drifting past when you dip your head under. If you’re lucky and patient, you might even meet a sea turtle during the day. They get no special fuss here; they show up, take a look around, and leave. Like a respectful neighbour.
The Sweetest Stop on the Lycian Way
If you’re planning a hike from Limanağzı back to Kaş — and that Lycian Way stretch happens to be one of its most popular sections — Büyük Çakıl falls right in the middle. You walk for an hour, you cool down with a swim, then you finish the trail. The hike-plus-swim combo is no different from a therapy session. There you have it: the one thing every quality hike needs is a swim somewhere along the way.
The Beach Cafés — Kitchens Open Morning to Evening
Büyük Çakıl isn’t a bare coastline. The cafés lined along the beach serve from breakfast through dinner with broad menus. Sun loungers and umbrellas, cold drinks, grilled fish, seasonal mezes — these are names every regular Kaş visitor knows. Each has its own character, its own loyal clientele; we won’t single any out by name. When you come down to Büyük Çakıl, just walk towards whichever one’s light feels inviting.

Sunset Stage
In summer the sun drops straight into the horizon from Büyük Çakıl. Have your camera ready.
Sunset or Sunrise? Answer: Both.
If you came to Kaş and left without seeing a sunset, you owe the Mediterranean a small apology. In the summer months the sun shifts north along the horizon — and Büyük Çakıl is one of the rare spots from which you can watch the descent head-on. Around six o’clock the loungers slowly turn towards the shore, glasses come up, voices drop. After a ten-minute ceremony, the place gathers itself again.
For the early risers, sunrise has its own surprise. Take a thermos of coffee, walk down to the beach — at this hour it’s only yours. Birdsong, water-silence. If you’re an evening kind of soul, choose the evening; if you live for the untouched air of six in the morning, choose the morning. Büyük Çakıl serves both.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get to Büyük Çakıl Beach?
15–20 minutes on foot from Kaş centre, 5 minutes by taxi. A path leads downhill to the beach. If you’re hiking back from Limanağzı, the trail brings you straight to the beach.
Is the beach paid?
The beach itself is free, but the cafés have a minimum-spend rule for using their loungers and umbrellas. A breakfast or lunch order is usually enough.
Is the water really cold?
Even at the height of summer it’s noticeably cooler than other beaches. The underground springs make it a wonderful relief on hot days, but small children sensitive to cold water may need a moment to adjust.
Is it suitable for kids?
Yes, but the large-pebble floor and steep entry call for water shoes. For very young children, Küçük Çakıl Beach is a gentler option.
How long from Luna Kaş to the beach?
About 10–15 minutes on foot, a few minutes by taxi. Our reception is happy to give directions or arrange a transfer.
