When you come to Kaş, one place you simply cannot leave without seeing is the Lion Tomb, which has survived from the ancient city of Antiphellos to the present day. The reason we say “impossible” is because the tomb is located right at the beginning of Uzun Çarşı slope—one of the most central and busiest spots in Kaş, especially during the season. Anyone visiting Kaş strolls through Uzun Çarşı. And once you’re there, you certainly won’t leave without seeing the iconic Lion Tomb, which has become one of the symbols of Kaş. If you’re staying at Luna Hotel, it’s even more impossible to miss, as Luna Kaş is just a few minutes’ walk away :)) Or are you one of those who don’t like history? Sorry, my friend—even if you don’t, you’ll definitely come across the Lion Tomb 😎

We said the tomb is one of the symbols of Kaş—and we meant it. If you enjoy buying souvenirs, you’ll notice that most gift shops in Kaş include the Lion Tomb in their depictions of the town. If you want to take home a gift that truly represents Kaş and reminds you of your time here, we think the Lion Tomb is a great choice…

For those who frequently visit Kaş and for locals, sitting on the pavement stones beneath the tomb and chatting has almost become a tradition—and an experience you’ll never get enough of. Being in history, speaking within history, and taking a spiritual journey thousands of years into the past while still breathing in the present… My friend, you simply can’t understand it without coming here and experiencing the atmosphere yourself.

Believed to be at least 2,400 years old, this majestic tomb will take you on a journey through time. You shouldn’t leave Kaş without touching it or walking around it.

If by any chance you can’t find it or someone you ask doesn’t recognize the Lion Tomb, just ask for the “King’s Tomb.” They will surely show you the way :)) Because the Lion Tomb is also known as the “King’s Tomb” in Kaş :))

What is a sarcophagus?

The word “sarcophagus” means a stone or marble burial structure.

Sarcophagi were designed in ancient times to hold the remains of wealthy individuals or members of royal families. Essentially, they are tombs, but their grand appearance and detailed craftsmanship set them apart from ordinary burial sites. Although many were made of marble, a large number were also carved from other types of stone commonly found in the region.

The chamber-like structure of sarcophagi is due to the belief that the deceased would need their jewelry, money, and valuable belongings in the afterlife, and were therefore buried together with them.

All Lycian sarcophagi, including the Lion Tomb, resemble miniature houses with their roof-like lids and small window openings. Their domed covers and door and window-like facades date back to the 6th century BC in Lycia and extend into the imperial period.
