Historical & Cultural Sites Patara Ancient City and Beach
When you come to Kaş, you shouldn’t leave without visiting the ancient city of Patara and its untouched beach. The moment you step into this region, which holds thousands of years of history, you’ll witness breathtaking views. Patara, the most important and largest port of the Lycian civilization, is also home to the world’s oldest known lighthouse and the first parliament building. One of the most remarkable features of this parliament building is that it functioned as a democratic assembly. It was built during a time when democracy was the dominant system of governance, and Patara was one of the six Lycian cities with the right to cast three votes. As you walk through the ancient city, imagining yourself in the capital of a great civilization makes it impossible not to be amazed. Archaeological excavations here have been ongoing since 1988.
Patara was not only significant during the Lycian period but also held importance in the Byzantine era. The figure we know as Santa Claus—whom we imagine living at the North Pole and delivering gifts to children—was actually Saint Nicholas, a bishop born in Patara 🙂 As you can see, Patara is an extraordinary place where history is present in every corner.
As you pass through the ancient city and follow the sound of the wind, you experience a second wave of awe. In front of you lies a massive 16-kilometer beach stretching as far as the eye can see. There are no commercial establishments—it remains completely natural and is protected by the Wildlife Conservation Foundation as a nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles (caretta caretta). In fact, access to the beach is completely prohibited in the evening, and even lighting a light is not allowed. This is because newly hatched turtles find their way to the sea by following the natural glow on the water.
Since the coastline is generally quite windy, it is also an excellent spot for those interested in water sports. Patara Beach, a favorite among surf enthusiasts, occasionally hosts
various competitions and events. Additionally, since the sea is shallow, it is also very suitable for those who cannot swim.
It becomes very clear why Alexander the Great once chose to rest his fleet here—the wind and waves seem to hum a peaceful melody together. You know those desert scenes in classic Yeşilçam films? That’s actually Patara Beach 🙂 When you visit, I’m sure you’ll feel like a child unsure of which direction to run, overwhelmed by the vastness around you.
And then there’s the sunset… so mesmerizing that you won’t want the sun to sink so quickly as it lingers on the horizon like a glowing red sphere. My advice: bring a bottle of wine and someone you love, and experience it for yourself. Only then can you truly feel the depth of this beauty—beyond what words can describe.
